Drawings

Class assignments working on color, proportion, and perspective.

Glass Perspective – 2023

18″ x 24″ Graphite on Watercolor Paper

This was a project on perspective, transparency, and reflection. The still life was set up to include glass objects within glass objects. The goal was to learn how reflection and light acts differently through glass, as well as learning more about the perspectives of ellipses when looked at in different conditions.

Figure Drawing with Surroundings – 2023

18″ x 24″ Graphite on Watercolor Paper

This project was a lesson on figure drawing while keeping the proportions of surroundings in mind as well. The time limit for this project also helped me improve my drawing techniques to be able to create a drawing with this much detail in a limited time frame. There are still many things that can be improved, which likely would have turned out differently had I been able to work with the model for a longer period of time.

Gesture Drawing Case Study – 2023

18″ x 24″ Charcoal on Newsprint

This is a case study on gesture drawings that communicate movement. The task was to draw figures from a reference photo within a limited time. I learned the importance of noticing S- and C-curves within the human body and how the placement of these curves conveyes movement within a composition.

Color and Pattern – 2023

18″ x 24″ Watercolor and Chalk Pastel on Watercolor Paper

This project was based in creating a pattern with a limited color palette. I chose to include motifs from my Indian culture, including peacock feathers and flowers that are typically included in mehendi designs. At the time also really enjoyed drawing monstera leaves, so I included them to help fill up some of the empty spaces as well. This project helped me learn about the elements that make up a pattern, and how to work within a limited color palette.

Nature Still Life – 2022

18″ x 24″ Black and White Charcoal on Grey Drawing Paper

This still life was a lesson in composition and perspective, as well as shading. For this project, I used a dried rose, stick, and small stem of leaves. Throughout this project, I learned how best to use white charcoal and how to create lighter and darker shades on an already mid-toned sheet of paper.

Imagined Spaces: 2-point Perspective – 2022

18″ x 24″ Black and White Charcoal on Grey Drawing Paper

This still life was a lesson in composition and perspective. For this project, I got the opportunity to create my own imagined space. I chose to create an hourglass shape with sandcastles on the top side that pours down to create a new one on the bottom side. This hourglass is placed in a room with a checkered floor and cloud wallpaper. This project helped me learn about 2-point perspective and the importance of light sources to create realistic shading within a composition.

Color Case Study – 2023

9″ x 12″ Chalk Pastels and Watercolor on Watercolor Paper

This color project was an exercise on how color and shadow work in an art perspective. The top work shown here was created using chalk pastels, while the bottom work was created using both watercolor and chalk pastels. I learned how to blend watercolor and chalk pastels to create more realistic shadows and how to percieve color in a natural environment where I did not previously look for slight color shifts. There are areas in both works where the shading could have been more defined (top work) and less harsh (bottom work), which I will keep in mind for future color drawings.

Self-Portrait – 2023

18″ x 24″ Charcoal on Watercolor Paper

This self-portrait project was an exercise on learning facial proportions and how to draw faces using the Loomis Head method. I also learned how to shade in regards to planes along the face. Because I took my reference photo from the front camera of my phone, it caused a fish-eye effect, which I will make sure to keep in mind for the next time I create a facial portrait.

One-Point Perspective Hallway – 2022

18″ x 24″ Charcoal on Watercolor Paper

This project helped me learn about one-point perspective, which was one of the things I struggled with immensely prior to this. I learned a lot about measuring within perspectives and how ellipses and rectangles change throughout the grid that can be created within a perspective drawing.

Mood and Color – 2023

18″ x 24″ Watercolor and Chalk Pastel on Watercolor Paper

This project was an exercise on conveying a mood through color, composition, and layout. I chose to use a small purple octopus Squishmallow to create two still lifes. The top drawing conveyes softness through the contrast in the sharp folds of the paper versus the soft folds in the Squishmallow. The bottom drawing conveys looming through the exaggerated upwards perspective of the Squishmallow.

Still Life – 2022

18″ x 24″ Charcoal on Watercolor Paper

This still life was an excercise in perspective and shading, as well as perspective. Through this project, I learned how to convey different textures and 3-dimensional curves on a 2 dimensional surface. There are a few points where the shading could have been improved to allow for a more realistic perspective, which I will keep in mind for future still lifes.
